Fabulous Hawks come to Wilderness Wood

Just as the falconry display are about to depart from Radio 4’s flagship soap, the Archers, they’re soon to be flying (for a fleeting visit!) into Wilderness Wood, in Hadlow Down, East Sussex.

Following an exciting morning spent with our regular Saturday Junior Rangers club, we’re delighted to welcome Colin Boardman and his hawks back to the award winning woodland to give a falconry display in the paddock, this time for all to enjoy.

Falconry, which can be traced back as far as 2000BC when it was reserved for royalty only, is said to be the oldest sport in the world, and one whose importance and significance has withstood the test of time. Meeting hawks and falcons up close up – especially handling them – leaves a lasting impression. Opportunities like the one at Wilderness Wood on Sunday 29th May -  that include learning about as well as handling these creatures – are important for the maintenance of their care and conservation for years to come.

Visitors will be able to see these fascinating birds in action as Colin lures them in from the trees, and also have a go at holding the magnificent birds themselves.

Woodland owner Joanna Yarrow says: “It was brilliant to how much the Junior Rangers enjoyed the birds and just how great they looked against the backdrop of the wood on their last visit, and I can’t wait for their return. They really are beautiful animals, and I hope everyone will enjoy the experience of seeing them fly in such a beautiful setting, as well as getting up close.”

The falconry display is just one in a line of unmissable summer events to be held at Wilderness Wood; from woodkid events such as wildlife safaris, gruffalo hunts and fairy gardens to green lifestyle workshops including woodsweat and green your home. For more details on our events please see our website.

This one-off event will take place on Sunday 29 May 11am – 12 noon. Usual admission charges apply plus a small charge for photo opportunities with the hawks.
