Enjoy Amazing Art in the RHS Gardens this February Half Term

 Families need look no further than their nearest RHS garden for a fantastic day out during February half term 2012.   From scarecrow making to caterpillar puppets, there’s a great choice of creative garden-inspired art workshops to choose from around the country

Get Inspired around the Garden at RHS Garden Harlow Carr

Budding Picassos should make their way to the charming RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Harrogate to get their hands dirty with fun for all the family whatever the weather. Hunt round the garden for natural materials to turn into your very own masterpiece, with trails and workshops designed to bring out the artist in everyone.

 Harlow Carr captures the essence of Yorkshire within a beautiful garden setting, with features evoking the surrounding landscapes, including water features, dry stone walling, wooded areas and also some ornamental aspects redolent of Harrogate itself.  It has something to offer for each season, and for families, the garden offers a combination of wilderness and sense of adventure in a landscaped, self contained setting.  Young visitors will love the log maze and lurking in the garden is a Log Ness monster, perfect for clambering over, and completely made of logs.  There are family trails throughout the garden, as well as the children’s play area and woodland dens. 

The workshops and trail run every day from 11-19 February, from 10am-4pm. Normal garden admission applies.

Make Your Own Scarecrow and Celebrate the Year of the Dragon at RHS Garden Hyde Hall

In the heart of the Essex countryside, with sweeping panoramas, big open skies and far reaching views, RHS Hyde Hall is offering the chance to enjoy traditional family fun, Worzel Gummidge style. Make a scarecrow to take home with you – the garden will will provide all you need for to create Worzel himself…if you can bring the clothes to dress him! 

Pre-bookable one-hour sessions at: 10.15am, 11.45am& 1.15pm, Saturday 11th February 2012. Normal garden admission applies plus £7 per scarecrow kit. Booking essential on 0845 612 1253.

Traditions from quite a different cultural heritage are also on offer, with the chance to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Dragon.  Children can get creative making masks, fans and mini dragons to mark Chinese New Year.

Taking place between 10am-3pm, 15th and 16th February. Normal garden admission applies, plus a cash payment of £2 per child. Booking not required.

Located just outside Chelmsford in Essex, RHS Garden Hyde Hall is the perfect place for families to discover the great outdoors, with plenty to keep children occupied.  It consists of an 8 acre, intensely cultivated hilltop area, surrounded by vast open countryside, with  vast swathes of grasses and perennials on Clover Hill, and an estate beyond comprising of developing woodland, hedgerows, bee hives, meadows and pasture.  It is a haven for wildlife with multitudes of songbirds and brown hares running across the meadows.   Hyde Hall is an ideal kite flying location and children who bring their own kite during school holidays and weekends are admitted free. There is also a great play area with climbing and balancing equipment made from natural materials.

Clay Birds, Windchimes and Recyled Art at RHS Garden Rosemoor

Nestled in the Torridge valley in Devon, just west of Exmoor National Park and south of the North Devon coastline, the beautiful RHS Garden Rosemoor provides a wonderful setting for some truly inspiring art activities.  With February being the prefect time of year to start looking out for birds in your own garden, on Monday 13th, youngsters can try their hand at making their own colourful clay birds, birds nests and birds eggs.  On Tuesday 14th, there’s the chance to make your own windchimes for the garden using recycled materials, whilst Thursday 16th sees the arrival of Mrs Recycle herself, who will be running fun art workshops throughout the day.

Rosemoor is a magical place for children to explore, with its winding paths and different areas to discover.  A children’s trail runs throughout the garden, with a version for each season, encouraging young visitors to spot plants, insects and other sights.  Children who complete the trails can collect a little prize from the visitor centre. The Brash is the family picnic and play area, a natural hideaway in the woods for children (and adults) of all ages to enjoy.  With log stepping stones, dens that are perfect for hide and seek, giant bugs to spot and bird feeding there’s plenty to keep everyone busy.

Caterpillar puppets and butterflies at RHS Garden Wisley

Enjoy fabulous caterpillar and butterfly art activities at RHS Garden Wisley, the RHS’s outstanding flagship garden in Surrey. Make a caterpillar stick puppet, a wonderful butterfly or sow some seeds to attract butterflies to your own garden.  While you’re there, visit the butterflies in the spectacular ‘Butterflies in the Glasshouse’ event taking place at Wisley from 14 January – 26 February 2012.

For families, the sheer size of Wisley gives great scope for exploration and discovery.   There are family trails at the garden entrance, with ideas of the best spots to explore, things to look out for and fun activities in the garden.  There is even a dedicated RHS Garden Wisley I-Spy book to keep younger visitors on track.  Would-be jungle explorers can venture into the Tropical Zone of the Glasshouse, whilst bird lovers can visit the bird hide, or see the ducks on the lake.  The arboretum and pinetum are great for spotting pine cones, there is a fascinating ‘plants for bugs’ area and seasonal bug-collecting and insect- identification activities, whilst children of all ages will love the outdoor play area with its naturally created climbing and balancing equipment.
